What are sexually transmitted diseases?

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a group of infectious diseases which result in different clinical conditions and where the major route of transmission is the “sexual contact”. Diseases most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are:

  1. Genital warts or genital warts caused by human papillomavirus;
  2. Genital herpes;
  3. Gonococcal infection, chlamydia, etc. which generally they enrolled in man as urethritis (infection through urine output with or without secretions) and in women as cervicitis (infection of a part of the matrix). These germs, and others can also infect other body areas as oropharynx, anus, etc.;
  4. Syphilis;
  5. Lymphogranuloma venereum;
  6. HIV infection.

What are the causes of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)?

The main causes of STDs are:

  • Sexual behavior “at risk” determined by the non-use of condoms;
  • The type of sexual practice;
  • The number of sexual partners;
  • The age of onset of sexual activity;
  • Abuse drugs and alcohol, etc..

You can diagnose STDs?

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) may be asymptomatic, the patient has no symptoms and not know they are infected or infecting. These cases are detected only when a post-risk behavior or when the contacts of an infected person are studied check is done and symptoms.

If symptoms and depending on their severity and location, diagnostic tests may include sampling of lesions or secretions swab or urine, blood or other fluids.

What prognosis there if you detect any sexually transmitted disease?

They usually have a good prognosis if diagnosed early. Otherwise, they can lead to infertility, chronic inflammatory diseases, fetal and perinatal complications, anogenital cancer and psychosexual disorders.

There are treatments for these diseases?

Treatment if you are diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) depends on the pathogen, the site of infection and the presence or absence of complications.

Sexually transmitted infections can lead to or be also caused by psychological disorders and, sometimes, medical treatment must be accompanied by psychological therapy. It is also good practice to contact a study and eventually treat / s partner / s patient sex, even if they show no symptoms.

Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases?

The best way to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs):

  • The correct use of condoms (place before any sexual contact), although there are infections that can be transmitted despite condom use;
  • Female condom;
